The Music Department holds accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music and serves as a key component of the School of Visual and Performing Arts within the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities. Students can pursue a well-rounded curriculum featuring both academic studies and performance experiences, covering areas like music theory, composition, historical studies, teaching methods, music appreciation, choral/ensemble participation, and private lessons—all guided by experienced, passionate instructors. Prospective students must complete a performance audition and theory placement evaluation.
Instrumental groups range from the Symphony Orchestra and Screaming Eagles Marching Band to the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band. Jazz offerings include the Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and smaller jazz combos. Vocalists can join the Concert Choir (SATB), Choral Union (SATB), or Treble Chorus (SSA), exploring diverse musical styles. Performance skills are further refined through chamber groups like brass/woodwind quintets, percussion ensembles, contemporary vocal groups, and two Korean Percussion ensembles. These groups regularly perform locally, nationally, and abroad, with select ensembles like the Jazz Orchestra, Concert Choir, Korean Percussion Ensemble, Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble receiving invitations to prestigious state and regional conferences. Auditions for all ensembles are open to UW-La Crosse students, regardless of their academic major.
