The Music Department holds accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music and serves as a key component of the School of Visual and Performing Arts within the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities. Students can pursue a well-rounded curriculum featuring both academic studies and performance experiences, covering areas like music theory, composition, music history, teaching methods, music appreciation, choirs/ensembles, and private lessons—all guided by experienced, passionate instructors. Prospective students must complete a performance audition and theory placement evaluation.
Instrumental groups include the Symphony Orchestra, Screaming Eagles Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, and Symphonic Band. Jazz offerings feature the Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and smaller jazz combos. Vocal ensembles such as Concert Choir (SATB), Choral Union (SATB), and Treble Chorus (SSA) allow students to explore diverse musical styles. Performance skills are further developed through chamber groups like brass and woodwind quintets, percussion ensembles, a contemporary vocal group, and two Korean Percussion ensembles. These groups regularly perform locally, nationally, and abroad, with select ensembles like the Jazz Orchestra, Concert Choir, Korean Percussion Ensemble, Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble receiving invitations to prestigious state and regional conferences. All UW-La Crosse students, regardless of major, are encouraged to audition for any musical ensemble.
