The Music Department holds accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music and serves as a key component of the School of Visual and Performing Arts within the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities. Students can pursue a well-rounded curriculum featuring both academic studies and performance experiences, covering areas like music theory, composition, historical studies, teaching methods, music appreciation, choral/ensemble participation, and private instruction—all led by passionate, highly skilled instructors. Prospective students must complete a performance audition and theory placement evaluation.
Instrumental groups include the Symphony Orchestra, Screaming Eagles Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, and Symphonic Band. Jazz offerings feature the Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, and smaller jazz combos. Vocal performance opportunities span the Concert Choir (SATB), Choral Union (SATB), and Treble Chorus (SSA), exposing students to diverse musical styles. Chamber music options include brass and woodwind quintets, percussion ensemble, contemporary vocal group, and two Korean Percussion ensembles. These groups regularly perform across local, national, and international venues. Select ensembles like the Jazz Orchestra, Concert Choir, Korean Percussion Ensemble, Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble have earned invitations to showcase at state and regional music conferences. UW-La Crosse welcomes all students to audition for music ensembles, regardless of their academic major.
Applicant must have completion of secondary or post-secondary from institution.
English Language Proficiency
Applicant must have TOEFL score of 73 with IELTS score of 6.0 and PTE score of 54. In addition completion of ELS level 112 and completion of WESLI level 700 is required.
Priority application deadlines are 15 December for the January/Spring semester and 15 July for the September/Fall semester.
