The Department of Global Cultures and Languages at UWL dedicates itself to fostering both professional development and personal enrichment for students. This mission is achieved by equipping learners with multilingual communication skills grounded in cultural understanding. Together, faculty and students explore diverse cultural expressions, traditions, and viewpoints. Through hands-on learning initiatives—including study abroad programs, internships, community service projects, and teacher preparation—we enable students to apply their acquired cultural knowledge, linguistic abilities, analytical skills, and leadership qualities toward promoting social justice in our increasingly interconnected local, national, and global societies.
Our department provides degree programs in French, German studies, and Spanish (including education tracks for French and Spanish), along with minors in Chinese studies. We also offer certificates in French proficiency, Chinese proficiency, Russian studies, and Spanish for healthcare professionals, plus coursework in Arabic, Japanese, and Hmong languages.
Students wishing to advance in a language previously studied should complete the UW System Foreign Language Placement Test for proper course placement. While following the test's recommendations improves eligibility for retroactive credits, it doesn't automatically ensure their award.
