The Master of Jurisprudence (M.J.) program caters to professionals without legal backgrounds who want to better understand legal matters affecting their work. Those pursuing careers with legal aspects will develop practical, valuable legal expertise to strengthen their professional credentials across various fields. With just four requirements—three core courses plus a significant research project—students can tailor their academic journey. Our M.J. faculty collaborates with each learner to design individualized study plans. Students may also enroll in pertinent courses from other university departments. Working professionals can maintain work-life balance through part-time enrollment and flexible morning/evening class schedules while engaging with the law school community. The program offers hands-on learning opportunities, enabling students to gain real-world experience through externships with innovative local businesses or nonprofit organizations.
Leveraging the University of Washington School of Law's renowned Native American Law Center, the Sustainable Development Graduate Program provides specialized Indigenous Rights Law tracks within both its LL.M. and M.J. degrees. This unique option enables students focused on Indigenous rights and First Nations issues to incorporate the law school's comprehensive Native American law curriculum into their Sustainable Development studies.
