The Master of Design (MDes) is a two-year graduate program tailored for designers seeking to enhance their expertise through intensive research and academic exploration, or those aspiring to enter academia. This degree is recognized as the highest qualification in the design discipline.
Our curriculum emphasizes cross-disciplinary collaboration and research-oriented design approaches. Learners craft personalized research plans and academic pathways, leveraging the diverse resources across the University of Washington's campus. MDes candidates frequently collaborate with departments including Engineering, Biomedical Informatics, Psychology, Communication, Nursing, and Business. Thesis projects have spanned diverse fields such as medical systems, aerospace, city development, and data representation.
An undergraduate BA or BFA degree in Industrial/Product Design, Visual Communication/Graphic Design, or Interaction Design and at least 1-2 years of experience in a professional Design practice are preferred.
English Proficiency:
The Graduate School is temporarily accepting official test scores for both the Duolingo English Test and the TOEFL ITP Plus For China to assist international students with remote testing options. This policy is currently in effect through the autumn 2021 admission cycle (i.e., students enrolling in autumn 2021).
TOEFL iBT - Minimum Required Score (ELP Required): 80; Recommended Score (ELP Satisfied): 92 or higher
TOEFL pBT - Minimum Required Score: 500
Duolingo: Minimum Required Score (ELP Required): 105; Recommended Score (ELP Satisfied): 120 or higher
IELTS: Minimum Required Score 6.5
