Welcome to the University of Washington's History Graduate Program. We specialize in educating future historians who contribute to academic knowledge about history while also teaching and connecting with wider audiences. Currently, over 50 students are enrolled in our MA and PhD programs across diverse historical fields, supported by faculty with extensive expertise. Our program emphasizes interdisciplinary and comparative historical methods, allowing students to collaborate with faculty across multiple disciplines and university departments. Both faculty and graduate students actively participate in digital history initiatives that enhance research, education, and public engagement with historical studies.
The U.S. history division stands out for its comprehensive coverage and variety. Faculty members specialize in all eras of American history, employing diverse methodologies and perspectives. Students are urged to take courses across departments and explore multiple approaches to their research topics. Key focus areas include Race and Ethnicity, African-American Studies, Women and Gender Studies, Western History, and Labor History. Notably, our department provides rare graduate training opportunities in African-American Intellectual History, Native American History, and Environmental History.
