The MA/PhD program provides two specialized pathways: Literature and Culture, or Language and Rhetoric. Students in either track will craft personalized academic plans with guidance from faculty advisors. These disciplinary areas maintain strong intellectual ties—Language and Rhetoric instructors engage with cultural questions, while Literature and Culture scholars examine linguistic dimensions. Cross-track course enrollment is both permitted and encouraged for all students.

These pathways deliver different professional preparation and credentials: Literature and Culture students develop expertise in research and teaching within literary fields (such as 19th-century British literature, environmental humanities, or modern fantasy genres). Language and Rhetoric students focus on language-related research and instruction, covering areas like writing studies, rhetorical theory, English language evolution, language acquisition, literacy development, and teaching methodologies. Their research may explore classroom writing practices or investigate linguistic topics including discourse patterns, language policy, or multilingual communication. PhD graduates from Literature and Culture qualify for academic positions in their literary specialization, while Language and Rhetoric graduates pursue careers in writing studies, linguistic research, or writing program leadership. Prospective students must select one track during the application process and cannot apply to both concurrently.
