The Buddhist Studies specialization within the South Asian Languages and Literature program, housed in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature, provides coursework for both the general M.A. and Ph.D. degrees with a focus on Buddhist Studies. Students can also incorporate Buddhist Studies courses into their B.A. curriculum or pursue M.A. or Ph.D. degrees with different specializations.

This program emphasizes the examination of Buddhist canonical and post-canonical texts through language study. As such, participants must engage in rigorous linguistic and textual analysis. The curriculum primarily centers on South Asian Buddhism, with Sanskrit as the main language of study, supplemented by Pali, Gandhari, and Classical Chinese.
