This program unites faculty across diverse fields, from Architecture to Sociology, to explore urban challenges and solutions through an interdisciplinary lens. Examining everything from local neighborhoods to entire metropolitan regions, it investigates how physical spaces, constructed environments, and social, economic, and political systems interact in urban settings. With its wide-ranging scope, the program enables doctoral candidates to specialize in urban design, planning, or various connected disciplines within social sciences, natural resources, and engineering.
The Program aims to cultivate scholars capable of advancing research, practice, and education concerning the built environment's connection to society and nature in global metropolitan areas. Students benefit from a robust interdisciplinary curriculum that leverages the University's full resources and the dynamic setting of the Seattle metro area and Pacific Northwest. Core educational principles include interdisciplinary collaboration, intellectual leadership, and ethical rigor, alongside commitments to equity, democratic values, and sustainability. The program fosters insights into how public policies influence—and are influenced by—urban physical, social, economic, and ecological contexts. Its graduates are expected to emerge as influential figures within the international network of professionals dedicated to enhancing metropolitan quality of life and environmental health.
Applicants are required to have completed a Master’s degree before entering the program, typically in fields ranging from planning and public affairs to natural and social sciences. Students interested in a professional degree in urban design and planning should apply to the Master’s program in Urban Design and Planning.
