Studying the humanities—through literature, languages, history, and cultural exploration—equips students to be thoughtful participants in society. This foundation not only gives them career-ready skills but also fosters lifelong adaptability and learning. Humanities education teaches students to appreciate diverse cultures, critically analyze various forms of information, and address the complexities of our globalized world.
Applicants to the doctoral program in Slavic Languages and Literatures are expected to possess an M.A. or equivalent degree. They are admitted by vote of the graduate faculty on the basis of their language skills (Slavic and English), general background in Slavic cultures, previous academic performance, and a comprehensive statement of purpose.
English Proficiency:
The Graduate School is temporarily accepting official test scores for both the Duolingo English Test and the TOEFL ITP Plus For China to assist international students with remote testing options. This policy is currently in effect through the autumn 2021 admission cycle (i.e., students enrolling in autumn 2021).
TOEFL iBT - Minimum Required Score (ELP Required): 80; Recommended Score (ELP Satisfied): 92 or higher
TOEFL pBT - Minimum Required Score: 500
Duolingo: Minimum Required Score (ELP Required): 105; Recommended Score (ELP Satisfied): 120 or higher
IELTS: Minimum Required Score 6.5
