As the leading research university in the Northwest, the University of Washington provides a comprehensive academic setting for its roughly eight thousand graduate and professional students pursuing advanced degrees. The Political Science Department, among the largest social science units, features a doctoral program culminating in a Ph.D. degree. Candidates working toward their doctorate will simultaneously earn a Master of Arts degree as an integral component of the program's requirements.
Political science as a field focuses on governmental theories and political practices. Graduate-level study entails rigorous examination of diverse political topics, spanning regional comparative politics, global peace initiatives, feminist political philosophy, and U.S. electoral patterns. This disciplinary diversity, reflected in the research specialties of UW's political science faculty along with their supportive approach, enables students to craft personalized academic paths aligned with their professional aspirations and intellectual interests.
