The University of Washington's Department of Anthropology organizes its faculty, programs, and curriculum around three main anthropological subfields. While graduate students can enroll in courses across all subdisciplines (and any university department), applicants must select one specific program when applying for admission. PhD candidates in anthropology concentrate on a single subfield, each with distinct requirements.
Biological Anthropology graduate students earn their PhD by completing a core curriculum and conducting specialized advanced research. The program aims to cultivate expertise in human biological adaptation and evolutionary foundations through ecological, genetic, developmental, paleontological, behavioral, and epidemiological studies. Students build their specialization under faculty guidance after establishing a strong foundation in theoretical frameworks and research methodologies.
An applicant for admission to the graduate program must have a BA or BS degree. An undergraduate major in anthropology is helpful, but those who have not majored in anthropology are also encouraged to apply.
