The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program specializing in Speech and Hearing Sciences (SPHSC) caters to students fascinated by the scientific and theoretical aspects of human communication and its challenges, encompassing biological, cognitive, environmental, and cultural influences. This SPHSC program offers a comprehensive exploration of the field and related careers, delivering a research-focused education in core principles spanning neurological, behavioral, physical, and anatomical-physiological aspects of speech, language, hearing, balance, and swallowing functions.
The curriculum also covers clinical approaches for diagnosing, preventing, and managing communication, balance, and swallowing conditions throughout life, emphasizing ethical considerations, teamwork across disciplines, and healthcare/education policies. Students gain research exposure while honing abilities in verbal/written expression, analytical reasoning, cultural awareness, and data-driven decision-making.
Graduates emerge well-equipped for support roles or advanced studies in speech and hearing sciences, whether pursuing clinical certifications in speech-language pathology/audiology or doctoral research/teaching paths. The SPHSC program also serves students interested in adjacent fields like education, linguistics, psychology, nursing, rehabilitation science, medicine, and neuroscience.
Student must have a High School Qualification.
Due to limited testing availability from COVID-19, the UW will accept the Duolingo’s English Test for autumn 2021 applicants. A minimum score of 105 will be required for admission. The TOEFL iBT special home edition and the IELTS Indicator at home exam will also be accepted for 2021 international freshman applicants.
