The University of Washington's Astronomy Department provides a comprehensive range of courses covering diverse areas such as planetary science, star formation and life cycles, interstellar media, galaxy formation, studies beyond our galaxy, both practical and theoretical cosmology, along with a summer observation program utilizing a 30-inch telescope equipped with advanced technology.
The Bachelor of Science program focuses on building strong foundations in physics and mathematics, requiring 18 credits of advanced astronomy coursework. This track prepares students for graduate studies or careers at astronomical research centers. With its intimate size and welcoming environment, the department fosters meaningful faculty-student collaborations. The displayed image features several of our present and former astronomy students. Undergraduate participants have established the League of Astronomers, engaging in community outreach, managing the Campus Observatory, running an astronomy student organization, conducting light measurement and spectral analysis with their 12-inch telescope (funded by Student Technology Fees), and developing an on-campus radio telescope installation.
