The School of Urban Studies has pioneered the first undergraduate urban design program on the west coast. Unlike architecture, which concentrates on single structures, urban design takes a broader approach - reimagining how we shape communal areas such as parks, thoroughfares, building complexes, complete districts, and even entire metropolitan areas. Urban design professionals strive to enhance these environments, making them practical, visually appealing, and eco-friendly. Our Urban Design program equips students with expertise in cutting-edge design tools like SketchUp and Lumion for developing both 2D layouts and 3D models. Furthermore, the BS in Urban Design empowers students to channel their enthusiasm for social justice into impactful urban planning initiatives that foster vibrant, equitable communities. The curriculum intentionally integrates real-world community issues into design studio work, cultivating graduates who are dedicated to lifelong civic involvement.
