The University of Washington's Turkic and Central Eurasian Studies Program stands among the most established and prestigious programs of its kind in the U.S. It provides comprehensive studies covering Turkic languages, cultural traditions, historical developments, literary works, and regional expertise - a rare offering nationwide. Over eighteen faculty members from eight departments and three professional schools contribute to this interdisciplinary program.
Language instruction forms the foundation of the program, with beginner through advanced courses available in Uzbek, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, and Uyghur. Students can also develop reading skills in Old Turkic, Middle Turkic, and Chagatay texts. The program's breadth is further enhanced by offerings in Arabic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish, and modern Turkish languages.
Both undergraduate and graduate students benefit from the program's interdisciplinary approach, which combines Central Eurasian studies with related fields like history, international affairs, anthropology, political science, and the languages and cultures of Slavic, Near Eastern, and East Asian regions.
