The dance major program provides a comprehensive exploration of dance as both an artistic discipline and cultural expression. Learners engage with dance through multiple analytical lenses: technical, creative, historical, cultural, aesthetic, teaching, and scientific approaches, creating an educational experience that equally values artistic practice and scholarly inquiry.
Career Pathways
Most dance majors (80%) complete dual degrees, equipping them for diverse professional trajectories. Whether pursuing performance, arts education, healthcare, or other sectors, our curriculum supports students in tailoring their studies to align with personal aspirations. In Dance 480: Career Development for Dancers, participants assess their skills and passions while investigating practical career possibilities. This course features industry professionals, resume and cover letter workshops, grant application training, and workplace observation opportunities.
True to its liberal arts foundation, the program encourages students to discover connections between dance and their other academic or artistic interests. As a Bachelor of Arts rather than a B.F.A., the curriculum requires substantial coursework beyond dance, with many students pairing dance studies with additional majors. Department faculty and advisors provide personalized guidance to help students design educational paths that support their professional objectives. This undergraduate program prepares graduates for advanced academic study, performance opportunities, dance-adjacent fields like movement therapy, and various professions requiring excellent communication, creative thinking, dedication, and both collaborative and independent work capabilities.
