Students pursuing the general concentration have flexibility to explore diverse aspects of Asia rather than specializing in one country or region. They can tailor their elective courses to achieve various objectives, such as gaining comprehensive knowledge about Asia or examining specific themes (like politics, social transformation, or economic growth) across multiple Asian cultures. The program requires two years of Asian language study, with any Asian language accepted. Native speakers of an Asian language can meet this requirement by showing college-level proficiency equivalent to second-year studies. This open major can be declared at any time. The China specialization within Asian Studies equips students with strong foundational knowledge about various dimensions of Chinese studies. Our faculty excels in both modern and historical studies, along with social sciences. The program also offers exceptional courses in language and literature. China Program participants are strongly advised to participate in intensive language programs abroad, such as the Inter-University Program in Taipei or Beijing University's Chinese Language Program.
