The Computer Engineering (CpE) Program provides a Master of Science (M.S.) degree that includes a thesis component. Candidates should review the School of Engineering and Applied Science's Academic Rules in the Record for institution-specific requirements that complement the CpE Graduate Program's criteria.
To earn an M.S. in Computer Engineering, students must complete a minimum of 24 credits from graded courses along with 6 credits of 8999 (Master's Thesis Research), totaling 30 credits.
Every M.S. candidate must complete a thesis demonstrating research worthy of publication. Accordingly, all candidates are expected to submit at least one paper to a peer-reviewed conference or journal. The M.S. Thesis Defense committee is formed collaboratively by the student and advisor, with final approval from the CpE Program Director. This committee's chair must be affiliated with either the CS or ECE Departments, while at least one member must represent ECE and another must represent CS. Following thesis completion and advisor approval, a public oral defense is mandatory. This defense consists of a student presentation (capped at 30 minutes) followed by a question-and-answer session.
