The Department of Environmental Sciences provides academic programs and research opportunities focusing on ecology, geosciences, hydrology, and atmospheric studies. This distinctive integration of multiple scientific fields within one department encourages collaboration across disciplines that employ similar methodologies and theoretical frameworks. Faculty, researchers, and graduate students engage in both specialized and interdisciplinary projects, addressing fundamental scientific questions about physical and ecological systems with societal implications. The department features three advanced degree options: Master of Arts, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy. For the M.A., students must complete at least 30 credit hours, with 24 credits from graduate-level courses, while working closely with their advisor to develop a thesis-inclusive study plan. All degree candidates receive training across ecology, hydrology, atmospheric science, and geosciences. The M.S. program combines rigorous coursework with original scientific investigation, requiring 30 total credit hours (including 24 graduate credits) and one course from each core discipline: ecology, hydrology, geosciences, and atmospheric sciences.
