The Economics Department is among more than 30 programs offered by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Our Economics Ph.D. program prepares students for academic and research careers through rigorous training in theory, quantitative methods, and hands-on research experience early in the program. This excellence is demonstrated by our alumni securing positions at prestigious universities like Chicago, Columbia, UCLA, Cornell, and Penn State, as well as top liberal arts colleges including Carleton and Brandeis. Recent rankings place UVA at fourteenth for graduate program academic placements. Students frequently obtain internships and full-time roles with Washington-based institutions such as the IMF, World Bank, Federal Reserve, FTC, and Congressional Budget Office. We welcome around twenty new students annually, maintaining a vibrant community of 80-90 resident scholars. With small class sizes, students enjoy close mentorship from faculty. The department supports graduate research with two modern computer labs featuring cutting-edge PCs and comprehensive software resources.

Qualification Requirements

The following items must be submitted with the application:
Statement of purpose
Transcripts
Two letters of recommendation
CV or resume
Standardized test scores
GRE General Test scores (use the institutional code 5820 when reporting GRE scores, no department code is necessary)

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam is required for international students whose native language is not English and who have not completed a bachelor's degree at an institution where English is the language of instruction. (Students who have completed, or are completing, a master's degree at such an institution may request a waiver for the TOEFL requirement, and such waivers will be considered by the Economics Graduate Admissions Committee on a case-by-case basis.) The minimum acceptable TOEFL scores are: 600 (paper-based test), 250 (computer-based test), 90 (internet-based test.) An IELTS score of 7.0 would also demonstrate English proficiency. Test scores are valid for two years from the test date.
