The University of Virginia's Music Department provides diverse musical education opportunities for all students. Learners can engage with jazz, African musical traditions, European classical compositions, electronic music, hip-hop, popular genres, and various global folk styles. With an expanding curriculum and ensemble offerings, our department ranks among the nation's premier music programs. Students may join performing groups, pursue academic music studies, or blend both approaches to deepen their musical engagement. Courses cater to all skill levels, welcoming complete beginners through advanced musicians to expand their musical horizons. Our program treats music as a liberal art, fostering musical comprehension through critical examination (encompassing cultural studies, aesthetics, music history, and ethnomusicology), theoretical analysis, creative composition, and performance skill development across multiple genres and styles.
