The 4+1 program provides an accelerated pathway to graduate school, allowing students to earn a master's degree with just one additional year at UVa. This is a terminal program, meaning participants cannot pursue a doctoral degree afterward without undergoing the standard full admission process. Students who finish their bachelor's requirements in three years may opt for a 3+1 variation, completing the program in four years total.
4+1 program requirements:
Completion of 30 graduate-level credits (courses numbered 5000 or higher), in addition to undergraduate degree requirements.
Successful completion of either a master's thesis defense, a qualifying exam (equivalent to PhD-level general exams in Algebra, Topology, or Analysis), or an ad hoc exam (covering approved course material, as determined by two faculty members and the Graduate Committee).
