The Mathematics Department offers undergraduate students the opportunity to pursue a B.A. with various concentration options, along with a Ph.D. program for graduate studies. Additionally, the department partners with the Curry School of Education to provide a five-year combined B.A.-M.A. in mathematics education. Mathematics plays a crucial role in numerous aspects of daily life and professional fields, including medical imaging, sports analytics, digital communications, internet search technology, weather forecasting, finance, and actuarial science. Engaging with mathematics cultivates analytical reasoning skills, a valuable asset across diverse career paths, even those not explicitly math-focused. Furthermore, the department aims to instill in majors an appreciation for the subject's inherent beauty and the thrill of discovering and proving elegant theorems. At UVA, the mathematics curriculum provides a strong grounding in fundamental modern mathematical concepts while allowing students ample flexibility to customize their academic journey. To facilitate this, five specialized tracks are available: general mathematics, graduate preparation, probability and statistics, financial mathematics, and the five-year teacher education pathway. Students must complete one concentration, all of which build upon a shared core curriculum designed to sharpen precise and abstract reasoning abilities.
