The Global Commerce in Culture & Society (GCCS) program differs from business-focused curricula like those at the McIntire School of Commerce or the Engineering School's Entrepreneurship program. GCCS emphasizes examining economic institutions through historical and cultural lenses. Students investigate how economic systems interact with social contexts, exploring questions like: How do cultural factors influence economic structures? What diverse commercial models emerge from global historical analysis? What societal impacts arise from different labor organizations? The program also examines how modern institutions—from corporations to financial systems—have shaped today's world and environment.
GCCS fosters independent academic exploration, allowing students to tailor their studies across various disciplines with faculty guidance. As an interdisciplinary Global Studies major, it draws on expertise from anthropology and sociology departments, with numerous university-wide courses available to complement GCCS students' interests.
