Environmental Thought and Practice majors tackle the most pressing issues of our era. While science helps us grasp environmental challenges, solutions require broader perspectives. ETP integrates approaches from natural and social sciences, arts, and humanities, recognizing that every field offers insights about our planetary existence. Students apply this knowledge beyond academia.
Our century is defined by environmental concerns. With rising populations and global temperatures, humanity faces unprecedented challenges. The ETP major equips students to address these issues through interdisciplinary learning spanning sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Environmental challenges involve measurable physical phenomena—whether natural or anthropogenic—but their solutions depend on cultural contexts and historical factors more than scientific data alone. Policy solutions emerge from political processes informed by philosophy, economics, psychology, and ethics. Effectively addressing environmental issues requires synthesizing knowledge across these diverse disciplines.
The Environmental Thought and Practice program cultivates graduates who:
analyze scientific data, economic assessments, and ethical frameworks influencing environmental choices, and,
understand how political systems, historical developments, and cultural norms shape environmental problem-solving approaches.
bridge academic concepts with practical applications in the field.
