The Modern and Global Studies program provides an interdisciplinary exploration of contemporary literature and worldwide cultural developments. This curriculum focuses intensely on modern literary works and international cultural expressions, connecting them to related disciplines like religious studies, history, visual arts, political science, psychology, ethnic studies, media analysis, and foreign language literature. English majors can expand their academic horizons through this concentration, engaging with significant international literary contributions. The program investigates how English-language literature has proliferated globally - a trend present since literature's early days that now defines our interconnected cultural landscape. Works from regions like South Asia, English-speaking Africa, the Pacific Islands, and the Caribbean have gained critical influence in shaping literature's future. Participants in Modern and Global Studies explore these groundbreaking works while developing the cultural fluency needed in today's world. The program fosters vibrant intellectual exchange through intimate seminars, cross-disciplinary courses, and special events. Designed as a two-year experience, students typically apply during their sophomore spring semester, though applications are accepted throughout later years if candidates can demonstrate a feasible completion plan. Transfer students entering in their junior year should consult with the program director during Fall semester to explore participation options.
