Economics examines how individuals and societies allocate scarce resources and how markets function. It offers analytical frameworks and data-driven approaches to understand decision-making by individuals, households, firms, institutions, and governments across all aspects of society. Few recognize the expansive scope of economics, which enhances private sector efficiency, informs public policy in healthcare, education, environmental protection, and global progress, while advancing personal welfare. The UVa Economics Department maintains a distinguished legacy of top-tier instruction and cutting-edge scholarship. As an undergraduate, you'll learn directly from renowned scholars and policy experts within a stimulating academic setting. Every economics student at UVa completes core coursework in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. Equipped with these fundamental skills, students can select from diverse electives covering international commerce, financial systems, economic development, market structures, education economics, healthcare economics, competition policy, environmental economics, legal-economic interactions, and more. Economics students not only acquire robust analytical capabilities but also hone essential communication skills. The program offers specialized tracks in Financial Economics, Public Policy, Market Structures, and International Economics. High-achieving students may join the selective Distinguished Majors Program to conduct original research and complete a thesis. Outside the classroom, economics students can attend seminars and talks featuring prominent economists and policymakers from across the globe.
