The University of Virginia's Department of East Asian Languages, Literatures and Cultures boasts a globally renowned faculty specializing in all historical eras of the region, along with comprehensive language programs in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean ranging from beginner to advanced levels. Beyond language instruction, we provide diverse English-taught electives covering East Asian literature and culture, including classical poetry, ancient myths, crime fiction, modern film, and more. Students can pursue a B.A. in either Chinese Language and Literatures or Japanese Language and Literature. In collaboration with the East Asia Center, we work with departments like Anthropology, Architecture, Art, History, Economics, Politics, and Religious Studies to offer minor, bachelor's, and master's degree programs in East Asian Studies.
