The Department focuses primarily on studying Greek and Latin literature in their original languages, providing instruction from beginner to advanced graduate levels. These language studies are complemented by English-taught courses covering Greek and Roman civilization, as well as specialized subjects (such as Tragedy and Comedy, Greek Religion, the Augustan Era, Gender Studies, and Mythology). Since the University's inception, the Department has been dedicated to teaching Greek and Latin languages, literature, and cultural studies. Housed in Cocke Hall on the historic Lawn, it boasts a world-class faculty and a diverse community of graduate students and undergraduate majors. Faculty research expertise encompasses classical antiquity through the medieval period, with additional affiliated scholars from History, Art, Religious Studies, English, Politics, and Philosophy departments. Degree programs include a B.A. in Classics, M.A. and Ph.D. in Classics, and (in collaboration with the Curry School of Education) an M.T. in Latin.
