The Department boasts internationally acclaimed expertise in American Western history while maintaining comprehensive coverage of all aspects of US history. Situated in the Mountain West region, our students frequently engage in research spanning Western studies, ethnohistory, religious studies, Indigenous history, public history, gender studies, and environmental history. The University of Utah houses the renowned American West Center, established in 1964, which promotes interdisciplinary research and public scholarship about the American West. The Center focuses on three key objectives: creating research that benefits community partners, developing innovative humanities programs for diverse audiences, and educating future scholars in community-engaged research methods.
