Spanning from ancient civilizations to contemporary population movements, from Spain's colonial aspirations to the complexities of industrial development, Latin America stands as a remarkably varied area with a vibrant historical tapestry. Our Department explores both contemporary and colonial Latin America, with specialized focus on Mexico and Brazil. At the University of Utah, research into Latin American history benefits from the Center for Latin American History, the institution's Title VI National Resource Center dedicated to Latin American scholarship. Graduate students pursuing Latin American history can apply for funding through the Center for Latin American Studies' Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships. This academic discipline is further enriched by an active cross-disciplinary network of researchers from various university departments, encompassing Gender Studies, Art History, Languages and Literature, Philosophy, Communication, Sociology, Film Studies, Political Science, Economics, and others.
