The Geography Master of Science program serves as an excellent pathway for advancing your career in Geography or pursuing doctoral studies. This research-oriented degree offers outstanding opportunities to work alongside faculty members and fellow graduate students. The program concludes with a thesis project, developed under the supervision of your advisor and committee. Qualified MS candidates may secure competitive teaching and research assistantships, which provide tuition waivers and subsidized health coverage. Prospective students should possess foundational skills in statistics, GIS, cartography, writing, and mathematics – we recommend consulting with potential advisors about specific prerequisites.
The Geography MS curriculum offers adaptable course requirements to accommodate specialized interests. All candidates must complete GEOG 6000 (Advanced Geographical Data Analysis) and GEOG 6961 (Geographic Thought and Inquiry). Students may select two research-focused seminars from various options, with remaining electives available through Geography or other University of Utah departments.
