Environmental, science, and health communication examines how people, groups, and societies share information about ecological matters, scientific topics, and wellness concerns through words, visuals, and actions. We maintain that human communication regarding these subjects influences societal norms, awareness, regulations, key behaviors, and ultimately impacts both public health and environmental wellbeing. Discussions between individuals, media representations, organizational messaging, institutional policies, and purchasing habits all shape how environmental, scientific, and health concepts are formed and disseminated. Our curriculum explores how communication methods across different environments can face limitations while also fostering opposition and transformation. Recent faculty research has investigated diverse areas including the impact of public health messaging, indigenous opposition to toxic waste disposal, eco-friendly practices, historical media coverage of atomic experiments, approaches of Chinese environmental organizations, stories about weight issues, and media presentation of cancer-related data.
