Featuring intimate class sizes, personalized teaching, and frequent chances to engage with celebrated composers while showcasing their own works, students will cultivate a distinctive musical perspective. The MM program spans two years, requiring 32 to 35 credit hours that include one-on-one composition lessons, bibliography studies, music history and literature, and advanced music theory. Completion of a final composition project is mandatory. Composition studies at the University of Utah boast a rich heritage, influenced by pioneering figures like renowned Utah composer Leroy Robertson (1896-1971), groundbreaking Hispanic American artist Ramiro Cort's (1933-1984), and Vladimir Ussachevsky (1911-1990), a trailblazer in electroacoustic music. Their contributions have forged the Composition Area's vibrant identity, motivating faculty to champion creative originality and nurture each student's individual musical expression.
