The Department of Geology and Geophysics ranks among the top earth science departments, providing graduate education through three distinct programs: Geology (M.S./Ph.D.), Geophysics (M.S./Ph.D.), and Geological Engineering (M.S./M.S.Eng./Ph.D.). Prospective students with bachelor's or master's degrees in geosciences or related disciplines may apply to any program. While a master's degree isn't mandatory for admission, strong Ph.D. candidates typically possess research experience at either the undergraduate or graduate level.
Research specialties within the department span diverse fields such as structural geology, tectonics, stable isotope geochemistry, metamorphic petrology, geochronology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, petroleum geology, paleontology, environmental geology, paleoclimatology, geothermics, hydrology (both groundwater and surface water), igneous petrology, aqueous geochemistry, economic geology, exploration seismology, earthquake studies, and electromagnetics. For deeper insights into specific research focuses, explore faculty profiles in the Research Themes & Programs section. Clicking on individual faculty members reveals their research initiatives and notable recent publications. We strongly recommend reaching out to potential advisors before applying to discuss research possibilities and funding options.
