The Deafblind program equips educators to work with students experiencing both hearing and vision challenges. By pairing this with another special education certification (such as Visual Impairments, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Severe Disabilities, Mild/Moderate Disabilities, or Early Childhood Special Education), participants can earn a Utah endorsement in Deafblindness. Professionals with this endorsement can serve as traveling deafblind specialists or classroom instructors working with diverse learners, including those with deafblindness. Employment opportunities exist in school districts or specialized institutions for students with sensory impairments. While deafblind students represent a highly diverse group, many have additional disabilities beyond deafblindness - this program specifically trains educators to address these complex, individualized needs. Alongside deafblind-specific coursework, participants complete classes in Visual Impairments, Deaf and Hard of Hearing education, Severe Disabilities, and American Sign Language.
