This program concentrates on fostering vibrant communities and neighborhoods by improving social, economic, and environmental factors through skill development, cooperative planning, grassroots organizing, asset-focused growth, and policy support. Instructors and learners engage with under-resourced urban and rural regions, with special attention to Salt Lake City's culturally rich westside, as well as emerging gateway communities and scenic areas across the western U.S. Within these settings, we examine connections between concepts like local and global perspectives, theory and application, hands-on and specialized expertise, fairness and equal opportunity. Participants gain skills to drive transformation by forging connections and identifying shared interests within intricate systems. University students emerge as influential urban planners and designers while also shaping a progressive and energetic Utah. The accredited Master of City and Metropolitan Planning (MCMP) degree equips graduates to excel in directing the evolution of communities, cities, and regions. Foundational coursework highlights environmental sustainability, intelligent development, and equitable practices through clear communication, teamwork, and creative problem-solving. The program combines essential competencies with focused concentrations to ready students for leadership positions in government agencies at various levels, private sector consultancies, and non-profit groups. Cross-disciplinary collaboration with fields beyond urban planning is promoted. The educational experience also includes a practical community planning workshop and a culminating professional project.
