The study of Asian history encompasses three primary regions: China, Japan, and South Asia (India). Our faculty offers instruction spanning ancient and medieval eras, while their scholarly work concentrates on Asia's 18th through 20th century developments. This program excels in examining comparative colonial experiences, gender studies, legal systems, contemporary social activism, public institutions, and mass culture across Asia. Emphasizing transnational, diasporic, and cross-cultural historical perspectives, our Asian history specialists provide graduate-level courses that complement research on Europe, America, the Middle East, and other global regions. Recent graduate research has investigated racial dynamics within Britain's Indian and Chinese territories, the relationship between railroad expansion and Chinese national identity, and the intersection of gender roles and commercial culture in pre-war Japan.
