The Department is globally renowned for its expertise in American Western history, while faculty members also teach across the complete spectrum of U.S. historical studies. Situated in the Mountain West region, numerous students focus their research on areas like the American frontier, indigenous cultures, religious movements, Native American studies, heritage preservation, gender studies, and ecological history. Students can specialize in U.S. history as either a primary or secondary concentration for MA and MS degrees (covering colonial, 1800s, and 1900s periods), and as a PhD focus (19th and 20th centuries). The program accommodates part-time graduate students and those requiring evening class schedules.
