The Department explores multiple strategies for discovering and developing new therapeutic treatments. In natural products drug discovery, researchers extract and study compounds with medicinal properties from natural sources like plants and animals. Collaborating with the University of Papua New Guinea, the Barrows lab contributes to a global initiative to find anti-cancer, tuberculosis-fighting, and HIV-combating medications. Through diverse experimental methods, the Anticonvulsant Drug Development Program (link here) assesses compounds from worldwide sources for their potential in epilepsy treatment. Meanwhile, the Genomics team (link to genomics) uses gene array technology to uncover cancer-specific molecular pathways in patients, revealing new treatment targets and innovative therapeutic approaches.
