The Department's analytical and forensic toxicology studies primarily occur at the Center for Human Toxicology (CHT). This facility serves as both a research hub and testing center, offering analytical services, educational programs, and investigative support to the University of Utah, statewide institutions, the inter-mountain region, and national partners. CHT researchers are globally acknowledged for pioneering advanced techniques to detect drugs and their metabolites in human biological samples. With a historic focus on substance abuse research, particularly psychostimulants, the center has broadened its scope to include performance-enhancing substances and specific environmental toxins. The CHT's groundbreaking anti-doping research led to the creation of the separate Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory (SMRTL), which specializes in identifying and analyzing performance-enhancing drug use in athletic competitions.
