The Department's analytical and forensic toxicology studies primarily occur at the Center for Human Toxicology (CHT). CHT researchers are globally acknowledged for pioneering advanced techniques to detect drugs and their metabolites in human biological samples. With a historic focus on substance abuse research, particularly psychostimulants, the center has broadened its scope to include performance-enhancing substances and specific environmental toxins. The CHT's groundbreaking anti-doping research led to the creation of the separate Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory (SMRTL), which specializes in identifying and analyzing performance-enhancing drug use in athletic competitions.
