For those looking to make a meaningful impact by supporting others' development and serving as a catalyst for positive change, the University of Utah offers an undergraduate Special Education Teacher Preparation program. This comprehensive major combines interdisciplinary academic foundations with practical professional training for educating both young children and students with special needs. The curriculum features a Teacher Education Core covering diverse subjects including early childhood development, secondary education strategies, assessment techniques, language acquisition, legal frameworks, literacy instruction, mathematics teaching methods, and educational technology. During their final year, students undertake specialized coursework and teaching practicums aligned with one of five Special Education focus areas. Graduates who successfully complete the program, pass the Praxis II Special Education Content Knowledge Exam and Pedagogical Performance for Teachers (PPAT) assessment, will qualify for recommendation to the Utah State Board of Education to obtain their Professional Teaching License.
Professional Pathways
After graduation, you'll utilize the knowledge and classroom experience gained through the program to pursue special education positions at various grade levels - from preschool through high school. You may choose to teach within Utah's school systems or take your transferable teaching credentials to other states. Those who continue their education through graduate programs can explore advanced career options such as educational administration, school leadership, higher education instruction, or student counseling roles.
