Conflict arises both internally and in our interactions with others—whether with friends, family, or our broader communities, both locally and worldwide. For those seeking to identify and address conflicts constructively, the University of Utah's Peace and Conflict Studies program provides valuable insights. This interdisciplinary program, offered through the College of Humanities, Department of Communication, and College of Social and Behavioral Science, equips students with the knowledge, abilities, and ethical foundations to become effective peacemakers. Students can focus on one of three thematic areas: Conflict Resolution, Social Justice, or Global Perspectives. Core coursework covers subjects such as negotiation strategies, economic and social disparities, international relations and human rights, the intersection of religion and politics, and the economic dimensions of race and gender. The program culminates with a capstone project, seminar, and mandatory internship. Throughout their studies, students enhance their communication abilities, social consciousness, and analytical thinking, preparing them for diverse professional paths.
Career Opportunities
Program graduates are well-equipped for roles such as victim advocates, journalists, public relations professionals, and human resources or conflict resolution specialists. Opportunities exist in corporate, governmental, or freelance consulting settings, assisting individuals and groups in resolving disputes. With advanced graduate education, career possibilities expand to include counseling, mediation, legal practice, human rights advocacy, or academia.
