Materials science and engineering (MSE) integrates multiple scientific fields such as chemistry, physics, and engineering. Experts in this discipline utilize physics and chemistry fundamentals to address engineering challenges, enabling the creation and innovation of new materials: essential technologies like computer chips and solar panels wouldn't be possible without materials science and engineering. At the University of Utah's College of Engineering, this program provides students with the distinctive advantage of studying both scientific principles and engineering practices. Certified by ABET's Engineering Accreditation Commission, the MSE program includes coursework covering nanostructured materials, composites, microsystems design, biomaterials, nuclear materials, and various other topics. Every student undertakes a culminating design project that equips them for practical engineering design and implementation. Graduates will depart the University equipped with the technical competencies and theoretical understanding necessary to thrive across diverse scientific and engineering sectors.
