For four decades, the gaming industry has experienced tremendous growth in scale, diversity, and cultural influence. The University of Utah's Entertainment Arts & Engineering (EAE) program has provided a premier game-focused education for more than ten years, currently featuring a BS in Games, a Minor in Games, and a collaborative CS/EAE degree emphasis with the School of Computing. Students in these programs gain foundational knowledge in game creation, covering everything from entertainment design principles to developing serious games for health, teamwork, and social causes. The curriculum combines technical computer science instruction with specialized training in game design, digital art, and technical artistry. BS in Games students select from 10 EAE electives to concentrate on their preferred specialization, while also studying complementary subjects like digital media, narrative design, visual arts, gender studies, and business management. The program culminates in a collaborative Capstone project where all game development students team up to create and launch an original video game.
Professional Pathways
Game development graduates are equipped for careers in simulation technology, software engineering, animation, network systems, educational gaming, and data visualization, along with various roles in the commercial gaming sector. Pursuing graduate studies enables further specialization and advanced expertise in game production and design concepts.
