The English department provides a versatile Master of Arts (M.A.) program designed to equip students for teaching careers, doctoral research, and creative pursuits. Our curriculum spans diverse subjects supported by faculty expertise and McFarlin Library's world-class manuscript and book collections. Students can specialize in three key research areas: (1) Victorian and Modern British/Irish literature, (2) American studies encompassing cultural/gender studies, African American literature, Indigenous works, and women's writing, and (3) Early Modern through Eighteenth-Century British/Transatlantic literature. Additional seminar options include critical theory, composition pedagogy, and creative writing. Every M.A. candidate collaborates with the Director of Graduate Studies and faculty to tailor their studies to individual aspirations.
Through mentorship and internship initiatives, students refine their analytical and writing abilities. Graduates pursue fulfilling careers across various sectors such as media, law, healthcare, and corporate communications. English degree holders from our program have achieved notable success at institutions like Idaho State University, Teach for America, and major platforms like YouTube.
