Cognitive psychology examines mental processes, from how we receive sensory input to how we produce responses. These mental operations fall into two main categories: basic and complex cognition. Basic functions involve sensory perception, focus, and memory formation. More advanced processes encompass language use, creative thinking, problem-solving, and judgment. At UT, our department includes two cognitive psychology experts - Dr. Christman, who researches fundamental cognitive functions, and Dr. Jasper, who studies sophisticated mental processes.
