As geoscientists, we explore Earth, celestial bodies, and their satellites to understand their makeup, past, and dynamic nature. This encompasses our planet's formation and development, its chemical and physical traits, life's timeline, and how humans adapt to environmental shifts and natural hazards. Pursuing geoscience opens doors to diverse career paths across industries, government agencies, and educational institutions. Beyond traditional sectors like oil, gas, and mining, graduates find opportunities in environmental services, engineering consultancies, water management, regulatory bodies, and federal organizations such as the USGS, National Parks, and NASA, as well as teaching roles at all academic levels. Advancing to leadership positions in environmental firms typically necessitates earning a Professional Geoscientist license, which our program's curriculum fulfills through its required geology coursework.
Internships offer valuable hands-on experience, career exploration, and enhanced job prospects. Through UTSA's Handshake platform, students can discover employment opportunities, internships, and networking events. The College of Science's dedicated career advisor supports all science majors with internship guidance and resources.
Our Geosciences B.S. program equips students for professional success or advanced academic pursuits, emphasizing core competencies and practical skills. The curriculum allows specialization in four key areas: General Geology, Earth Systems and Climate, Environmental Geoscience, and Water Science.
The Water Science concentration builds expertise for tackling water resource challenges, preparing graduates for roles in hydrology, water management, and quality control. This specialization signals to employers a candidate's proficiency in water-related fields, improving employment prospects in both private and public sector water industries.
